The executive team has over 200 years of combined experience making Ubiquity’s team one of the most experienced in the solar PV industry.

Executive Team

Ian MacLellan, President & CEO –  – Mr. MacLellan has worked for, created and/or built significant technology and PV technology companies for over 30 years. He has led or co-led over $300M of debt, equity, and government grant financing projects. He worked for Motorola, Hewlett Packard, Oracle, Pachena Industries. He co-founded IC Engineering, Creation Venture Capital, Cyrus Systems, Creation Studios, Creation Technologies, ARISE Technologies and Ubiquity Solar Inc.

Francois Cartier, Chief Financial Officer - Mr. Cartier is a senior corporate finance, investment and M&A professional specializing in energy, power, renewables, utilities and climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Prior to Ubiquity, Mr. Cartier was an executive at the Green Ontario Fund, Head of M&A for Hydro-Québec, and Director of Energy Investments for the private equity portfolio of Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.  Mr. Cartier is an engineer from Polytechnique Montréal with an MBA and Master of Laws from the University of Toronto.

Raymond Desbordes, Special Advisor, Polysilicon Project - Mr. Desbordes spent 7 years at REC polysilicon as Engineering and Documentation Manager. Mr. Desbordes Currently works as Project and Operation Consultant with 22 years' experience in the chemical industry. Prior to REC, he worked for Arkema, Hydrogen Peroxide. Mr. Desbordes is Ubiquity’s project manager on the Quebec option.

Sjouke Zijlstra, EVP and GM PV Cell Business Unit – Mr. Zijlstra brings 35 years in the electronics and photovoltaic industries. He is the former VP and GM of ARISE Technologies Deutschland GmbH where he was responsible for managing the 80 MW cell production plant.  With 16 years in PV cell production at Shell Solar, and positions at SolarWorld, and ARISE Mr. Zijlstra is leading all European activities for Ubiquity.

Charles Marino, EVP, III-V PV Division President - Mr. Marino has over 20 years of operations and business development experience. He previously worked at Contract Custom Manufacturing, Quick Mount PV, Alta Devices, Powis and RJR Technologies.

Gary Robertson, EVP Corporate Development & Human Resources – Mr. Robertson has over 30 years of strategic human resources and corporate development experience in the PV, manufacturing, engineering and construction sectors. He previously worked at Canadian Solar Inc. as the VP of HR, Corporate Development & Administration.

Aaron Thurlow, EVP, Sales & Marketing - Mr. Thurlow has over 20 years of experience in solar energy. Over his career he has brought several new products and technologies to market, served on industry boards, and led global revenue growth for start-ups and publicly traded companies. Prior roles include; SunPower, National Semiconductor, Silevo (now Tesla), and LONGi.

Robert J. Johnston, Special Advisor to CEO - Mr. Johnston advises on public and government affairs, investor relations and communications. He has over 20 years of experience consulting with leading multinational corporations and institutional investors in the global energy and has a Ph.D. in International Relations from American University in Washington, DC.

Ubiquity has:

Over 60 full or part-time employees, officers, directors, consultants and/or advisors with significant experience in the PV and/or semiconductor industry, of which 32 have executive level experience and 13 with PhDs relevant to the PV industry and/or R&D. 

Several of them have had leadership roles in building over US$3B of PV or semiconductor materials fabs at other companies in the USA, Canada, Europe or Asia. 

Board Members

Tom Cadwell – Executive Chairman of the Board - Mr. Cadwell has over 30 years of silicon/semiconductor/solar experience.  As the former President and CEO of Confluence, IMI, Strasbaugh and Tecstar, Inc, and President MEMC Asia, he has particular knowledge and experience in technology businesses that rely on silicon or III-V compounds as their basic building block. 

Doug Beynon – Director, Chair Audit Committee - Dr. Beynon has over 25 years of experience in the technology sector. He was recently the CEO of Advanced Chemical Technologies and has over 25 years of experience in senior management roles in the technology sector. He is or has been anadvisor and/or Board member of a number of environmental and technology companies.

Bernard Boily - Director, Chair Cyber Security Committee - Mr. Boily is the President and Founder of Sedika Technologies (2010), a global distributor of training and certification solutions in the field of information technology and cybersecurity with sales in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Before founding Sedika, Bernard worked for Above Security (now Hitachi Systems Security) (2006-2010) as Vice President, International Business Development and at SR Telecom as Director of Manufacturing Engineering (2003-2005). SR Telecom was a public company (TSX:SRX) until 2008 when it was acquired and went private. He previously worked for Ernst & Young Consulting (1996-2003) (now Capgemini) and Coopers & Lybrand (1995-1996) (now PwC) where he led consulting engagement in manufacturing, supply chain and new product introduction in the US, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. He started his career at IBM (1989-1995) as a semiconductor Test Engineer.

Ian Cook - Director, Chair Compensation Committee - Mr. Cook is President, Cook Homes and have over 35 years entrepreneurial experience. Cook homes was a strategic partner with ARISE Technologies on Canada’s first solar subdivision in 2003. Ian is an investor in Ubiquity and a member of the Board of Directors since August 2021.Ian is a seasoned entrepreneur engaged in the real estate industry, focusing primarily on home building and land development.  He has demonstrated a keen interest in environmental stewardship with his involvement in several high-profile industry demonstration projects, including President of the “Waterloo Green Home”, the developer and owner of Canada’s first pre-lead C-2000 office building “Green on the Grand” and as a partner in Canada’s first Solar Neighborhood with ARISE Technologies.  He has contributed his broad depth of practical building experience towards the goal of seamless integration of evolving building technologies into the built form, including Building-Integrated PV Systems.

Nels Ostrom – Director of Operations, The Gund Company, 20-years experience in the PV, Electrical Equipment Semiconductor, and Laser industries

Kate Warne - Director, Chair Governance Committee - Kate recently retired after 22 years at Edward Jones, where she named a principal of the firm in 1999.  She primarily served as the firm’s investment strategist and was a member of the Investment Policy Committee.  Her responsibilities included analyzing market conditions and recommending appropriate investment strategies for investors with long-term financial goals.  Before joining Edward Jones, Kate worked at AT&T (1990-1995) and General Motors (1988-1990) and was an assistant professor of finance (1985-1988) at the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis.  She also lectured at Yale University (1984-1985) and was a Transportation Policy Specialist on President Regan’s Council of Economic Advisors (1981-1982).
